Method

  • step 1

Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the onions over a low heat for 10 mins until starting to brown. Add 3 tsp of the cumin, the ginger, garlic and curry powder. Stir for a minute to keep the spices from burning.

  • step 2

Tip in the chickpeas and the liquid from the can, along with the tomato purée, 20g of the coriander and some seasoning. Simmer over a low heat for about 10 mins. Add a splash of water if it looks too dry.

  • step 3

Meanwhile, rinse and drain the rice, add the remaining 1 tsp cumin seeds, 2 litres of boiling water and seasoning. Cook for about 10 mins, or until the rice is tender. Drain.

  • step 4

For the raita, grate the cucumber and stir it into the yogurt with the cumin, mint and the remaining coriander. Season, scatter over the pomegranate seeds, then serve alongside the chole and rice.

I think this is one of the best Chickpea curries I’ve made 😍 thank you!

We enjoyed this with cauliflower rice. Like a previous reviewer, we added lemon juice to the chole, which definitely lifts it. When we make it again, we'll probably replace 1 can of chickpeas with potato chunks, just for a variety of textures.

question

Where is the 4g of saturates per serving please? I googled 1 tbsp of vegetable oil and it says there is 2g and that's for the whole recipe (÷ 4 that's less than 1g). I can't see anything else in the recipe that would contain that amount of saturated fat. I googled the Greek Yogurt and it's says it's…

PS - if you'd like to reduce the amount of saturates you can use a low or even 0% fat Greek-style yoghurt.

followed this recipe exactly and its so bad. I don't know what I did wrong, but the taste is so bland and the yoghurt stuff makes it worse (it might have been the fact that I added the water in the can aswell? every recipe with chickpeas I've seen call to wash them out the can). So dissatpointed,…

I added the juice of one lemon and a teaspoon of sugar as I thought it needed a touch of acidity and sweetness to cut through. Very tasty - the raita is a must.
