Kenwood Mesmerine TFM810 toaster

Pros: Even toasting, fairly light
Cons: Quite slow, need to adjust for frozen bread

Overall rating: 4.5/5

This Kenwood model is the baby bear of the toaster world: everything about it was just right. It sadly lacks a warming function, which would have been welcome (using the lowest setting didn’t work as an alternative), but otherwise we found a lot about this model to like.

Not too large or heavy, the plastic outside stays cool enough to touch, which makes it a good choice for the safety-conscious.

Instructions are clear, and there are controls on both sides, which we see as important (as well as catering for families where everyone likes their toast or bagel a different way, it’s greener, too). There are also two individual click-shut crumb trays.

This was possibly the slowest of the toasters we tested, with a medium setting out of the five options taking a shade under three minutes, but it was worth the wait to be rewarded with golden browning all over and on both sides of a standard slice of toast.

It handled chunky slices of bread – something a lot of toasters seem to struggle with – and the bagel setting worked well, too.

The slots just about manage to take a taller slice of bread, although it didn’t toast quite as evenly, and we had to turn the setting down a notch for frozen bread – an issue we found with several of the toasters we tested.

As an aesthetic bonus, we were particularly taken by the sleek new design, which has a pleasing pearlised, 3D-effect and comes in four jewel-bright colours, as well as standard black and white.
