Heat the milk in the saucepan until it comes just up to the boil, then take off the heat immediately. In a bowl, beat together the egg yolks, vanilla sugar and flours. Pour the milk slowly over the egg mix, beating well.

  • step 2

Return the mixture to the pan and place over a low heat, stirring for 8-10 mins until the mixture begins to thicken. Remove and serve with the dumplings.

Made half quantity last night. Having read previous comments, I only used 1tblesp plain flour and 1 tablespoon cornflour. I also added a splash vanilla essence. End result was really good. Would recommend.

Who keep vanilla sugar. No-one that's who.. why can't recipes have normal ingredients that everyone has at home all the time?

Me. I always have a vanilla pod sitting in my caster sugar

Lovely but ..... way too much cornflour and flour. Wish I had read the reviews first. Should the recipe actually read tsps instead of tbsp?

Delicious recipe. I used only 2 tbspns of plain flour after reading the comments & it was perfect. Used 1 tspn of vanilla extract as I didn't have vanilla sugar. So much nicer than the custard powder!
