Method

  • step 1

Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unroll the pastry onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to 40 x 32cm. Spread a layer of pasta sauce over it, leaving a 1cm border around the edges. Arrange the ham evenly on top, then scatter the grated cheese over.

  • step 2

Starting at one of the short ends, roll the pastry up as tightly as possible. Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes or so.

  • step 3

Take a very sharp knife and cut the roll into 12 equal slices, laying them flat on 2 non-stick baking trays as you go. Brush each pinwheel lightly with beaten egg and sprinkle over the herbs. Bake for 12-15 minutes until puffed and golden. Leave to stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.

These turned out absolutely delicious! We used pizza sauce, unsmoked bacon lardons in place of ham, curly kale chopped up to sprinkle on top with the oregano and a mixture of mature cheddar and mozzarella. Next time I would like to add more leafy greens to garnish, like spinach. Great lunch idea :)

question

Can I leave the ready made pinwheels in the fridge overnight and then put them in the oven the next day? x

Yeah

Biddlybong

We made ours with homemade all butter shortcrust pastry and homemade tomato sauce. They turned out delish.

I would chill it for longer than 10 mins next time because when trying to cut it into smaller pieces it falls apart easily. 👍

I made these for myself and my eighteen month old for lunch. Delicious, and really quick to throw together. I used red pesto instead of pizza sauce, and snuck in some finely chopped red onion, red pepper and grated courgette to increase the veg count. They took slightly longer, closer to 25 minutes…
