  • step 1

    Put the orange slices, wine, sugar, cloves, cinnamon, star anise and ginger in a large pan. Warm gently for 10-15 mins, being careful not to let the mixture boil. Add the alcohol, pour into glasses and serve warm.

Start with a quarter of the recommended amount of sugar. I tried half and still found it too sweet to drink. I don't know how this recipe got 4 stars with such a big mistake.

In german/ austrian websites you will usually find Glühwein recipes with 50 g - 70 g sugar per 1 liter of wine. 200 g sugar per 0.75 Liter of wine ist too much by far!

Agreed. Half the sugar if not even less. Nice with rum as the optional alcohol addition.

We liked this but did reduce the sugar to about 100g. The only problem was that it ran out too fast! I would say the quantities in the recipe serve 4-5 and for my batch at least, everyone wanted more.

I think there is a typo in the recipe. 200g is way too much sugar. I think it should be 20g. Please check and amend as I see wasted a perfectly good bottle of red wine. It was undrinkable.
