Robert Welch Campden 3-piece saucepan set
Pros: stylish design, top grade steel/copper bottoms, even heat distribution
Cons: Investment price point
Overall rating: 4.5/5
The Campden range from Cotswolds-based company Robert Welch is lovely to look at – one you would feel happy to have on display in the kitchen. But does high style mean they're lacking in quality and performance? Thankfully not.
A weighty set, the three pans are solidly put together. As well as being comfortable to hold, the smooth handles keep cool to the touch even over a high temperature. The pans can withstand up to 220 degrees, so if need be, they could be transferred to the oven for further cooking.
The construction of the pans brings together lots of top-class components. High grade 18/10 stainless steel encases a copper centre layer – this was great for even heat. The pan lids fitted snugly with no shifting around.
From slowly scrambling eggs to flash-frying beef for a casserole, then setting to a low simmer, every pan in the set was a pleasure to use, responding quickly to heat changes.
Although the glossy finish made us slightly paranoid about scratching the surface while washing by hand, any food residue slid easily off the linings before being placed in the dishwasher and the pans came out sparkling.
It's worth noting that all the other saucepan sets we tested were packed with carboard and bubble wrap in pretty humdrum boxes, this Robert Welch set arrives in a more compact, tasteful black box. While that doesn't make any difference to how the pans perform in the kitchen, it's a good thing to bear in mind if you're looking for a stylish and practical wedding gift.
