To use this ice cream maker, will need a KitchenAid stand mixer. Make sure to check which model, some are not compatible.
This accessory is heavy and robust. As this machine can produce up to 1.9 litres of ice cream at one go, it will serve large families and ice cream lovers well.
Creating so much ice cream in one go means a large bowl, which takes up a lot of room in the freezer. We found it needed to be in the freezer overnight to get a solid freeze (KitchenAid recommends 15 hours).
It took us several goes to get the attachment (or dasher) connected, but once mastered, it was straightforward enough. It felt safe and secure, and adding the cream was very easy thanks to the large bowl size.
It’s relatively quiet (especially on first speed setting), but gets louder as it gets faster.
It has a lovely churning action – the dasher lifts and moves the cream around the bowl.
Within 20 minutes we had extremely light, creamy ice cream. It tasted just as good after 24 and 48 hours, needing 10 minutes out of the freezer to soften before eating.
Cleaning up was a doddle – the defrosted bowl hand-washed quickly and the dasher went in the dishwasher.
If you have a KitchenAid stand mixer (plus freezer room) and want large quantities of high-quality homemade ice cream, this accessory comes highly recommended. It produced one of the smoothest ice creams we made during our test of the best ice cream makers.
