KitchenAid 6.9-litre Artisan stand mixer
Pros: large capacity, quiet even at max power
Cons: heavy to move around, expensive investment buy
Star rating: 4.5/5
There's no messing around here: this is a large-capacity machine that will be your best friend when you're baking in bulk. With the largest capacity of any of the machines we tested for our best stand mixer review, it’s as near to a professional-grade mixer as you'll get.
That does mean it’s heavy – over 13kg – and it's the tallest of all the stand mixers we looked at, measuring 419cm. You'll need to consider its size and weight if it’s going to be stored anywhere other than the countertop.
Its design is different to other models in that the head of the machine doesn’t hinge backwards. Instead, you slot the bowl into its protective ‘arms’ and use the lever on the side to raise the bowl towards the beater and lock it in place.
When you're changing attachments, any drips always fall directly into the bowl instead of falling from high above it, which is a bonus. We did find it tricky at times to pop the bowl in place, especially with greasy hands, but it gets easier with practice.
With any stand mixer, it's to be expected that the noise level will increase as you work your way up the speed settings. With this KitchenAid model, we noticed how pleasantly quiet it was to use. Even when the motor was at full pelt, noise was pretty unobtrusive.
It produced perfectly glossy, peaked egg whites in a couple of minutes with its wide balloon whisk attachment, and could easily work through pizza and bread dough with its dough hook attachment. All of the attachments were made of superior, heavy-gauge steel.
The pouring shield was great quality and really easy to pop in place, working effectively to avoid splattering when pouring liquids into the mix, or to ensure flour didn’t plume up over the edges of the bowl.
There is a five-year manufacturer's warranty, but that’s will be a fraction of its lifespan. KitchenAid mixers are built to help you bake forever.
