Let's take snacking seriously! If we're treating ourselves to crisps – whether as an on-the-go snack or a nibble to put out with drinks for guests – we want to know the crisps we're buying are the best available. No soggy snaps, burnt potatoes or lacklustre flavour. Whilst cheese and onion remains the UK's most popular crisp flavour, we're fans of salt and vinegar for unmatched tang. Our food team blind taste tested 17 different salt and vinegar crisps from major supermarkets and brands to find the ultimate best crisps to buy.

The selection covered an interesting range of different vinegars used to flavour the crisps: from tangy chardonnay and fruity cider to punchy balsamic. Whilst we tried everything from familiar hoop-shapes to popped or roasted crisps made from lentils and even seaweed, it was the humble potato that reigned supreme. We were looking for a strong overall salt and vinegar flavour with a good level of salt and punch of vinegar tang without being overpowering. We didn't want crisps to be greasy and wanted a good crunch and attractive overall appearance for an enjoyable eating experience. These were our top-ranked winners.

Aldi Specially Selected Sea Salt & Chardonnay Vinegar Crisps

Aldi crisps

Rating: 5/5

These are everything we were looking for in a salt and vinegar crisp. They have a strong and punchy vinegar flavour, a thin crunch and golden appearance. We kept going back for more.

Co-op Irresistible Hand Cooked Sea Salt & Chardonnay Wine Vinegar Crisps

Co-op crisps

Rating: 4.5/5

These have a great appearance: good size, some visible peel and perfect thickness. They have a strong, classic salt and vinegar flavour whilst still tasting of potato too. Described as 'just what a salt and vinegar crisp should be' by one judge.

Asda Extra Special Sea Salt and Chardonnay Wine Vinegar Crisps

Asda crisps

Rating: 4.5/5

These crisps are on the larger side, but still sliced thinly with a satisfying crunch. They have a strong level of vinegar and decent hit of salt.

Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar Crisps

Screenshot

Rating: 4/5

These crisps are on the smaller side with a classic golden appearance and good crunch. The cider vinegar provides actual flavour as well as acid and tang, for a nicely rounded crisp.

McCoy's salt and malt vinegar crisps

Screenshot

Rating: 4/5

These look great: large crinkle cut crisps with deep ridges. They're very chunky and the salt is stronger than the vinegar. One for snacking rather than putting out for guests.

Simply Roasted sea salt and cider vinegar crisps

Screenshot

Rating: 4/5

These are very thinly cut, with attractive visible potato peel round the edge but also an ever-so-slight green tint. They have a strong snap and a good vinegar hit.

Lidl Deluxe salt and balsamic vinegar crisps

  • Available from Lidl
Lidl crisps

Rating: 3.5/5

These have quite a thick cut texture and deeply golden colour. There is no greasiness, a good level of salt and strong vinegar element which is slightly harsh at the start.
