Method

  • step 1

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Pour the custard into a large baking dish. Toss the apples in the orange zest and juice, cinnamon and sugar.

  • step 2

Arrange the apples, cut-side up, on top of the custard and drizzle with any extra juice from the bowl. Sprinkle over the granola and bake for 30 mins, until the apples are soft and piping hot – cover after 20 mins if the granola is getting dark. Serve with a drizzle of cream or a scoop of ice cream, if you like.

Made half a litre of custard to put in the bottom and really liked the Bramley apple/cinnamon/orange combo. Left out the granola so my topping was caramelised sugar. Tasty!

After reading the comments about the apples not cooking before the custard had dried up , I peeled the apples and cut them into chunks rather than just halving them, then covered the whole lot with foil and baked for 20 mins, leaving the foil off for 10 mins at the end. I also used soft brown sugar…

Can you show the exact calorie breakdown for each ingredient? When I worked it out, it came to 350 calories for each serving (a serving being 2 halves of a bramley apple).

Lovely idea, but the apples didn't cook through, the granola went soft and the custard hardened (!) by the time the apples had cooked. The orange and cinnamon on the apples was gorgeous though. Please improve this recipe as it has great potential, just didn't quite work for me.

Didn't have an orange so stuffed the apples with sultanas, put some Cointreau and orange juice in, oats on top and drizzled with maple syrup. Simple and very tasty.
