Method

  • step 1

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 or if using an air fryer, heat it to 180C for 3 mins. Tip the apples, cranberries, spices and sugar into a 22cm square baking dish and mix well to combine. If using an air fryer, add 2 tbsp water, cover and cook for 10-12 mins until the fruit is softened.

  • step 2

For the crumble, rub the flour and butter together using your fingertips until you have a breadcrumb-like consistency. Stir in the sugar and mixed spice. Sprinkle the crumble in an even layer over the fruit, then bake for 35-40 mins or air fry for 10-15 mins until golden on top and bubbling at the edges. Leave to cool slightly, then serve warm.

Tasted ok, I was surprised by the lack of flavour from the spices though so it just tasted like a regular crumble, nothing wrong with that of course just disappointing it wasn't more Christmassy.

tip

Made this the past few years and it's a hit! Some tips: - Frozen or refrigerated cranberries are both fine. Not much of a difference in the runniness of the crumble's base - Apples cut smaller (roughly 2-3cm squared) work best I think - To get close to the crumble pictured, make larger cut squares…

What is "mixed spice"? Something like pumpkin pie spice?

Hi, thanks for your question. Mixed spice is sold readymixed and is usually a blend of Ground Cinnamon, Ground Coriander, Caraway Seed, Ground Nutmeg, Ground Ginger and Ground Cloves. You can make up your own if you have these spices. We hope this helps. Best wishes, BBC Good Food Team.
